Retail cooling without downtime

Mall & retail HVAC in Al Baghdadiyah Al Sharqiyah

In Al Baghdadiyah Al Sharqiyah, central Jeddah's malls and shops face a shifting heat load every hour from open doors, intense lighting and fluctuating footfall. Alrabih designs a system that absorbs those swings whilst keeping moisture and goods in balance.

When you need a retail HVAC specialist

  1. 1

A new mall or shopping centre

A poor design from the start means cold zones next to stifling ones and endless tenant complaints. We study the heat load of each zone separately and choose the right unit type before the ceiling is built.

  2. 2

An existing shop with uneven cooling

The back of the shop is cold while the front near the door stays hot at peak hours. The cause is usually the air outlet layout or the unit size; a site survey identifies which and fixes the problem without replacing the whole system.

  3. 3

Condensate dripping on shelves or display

A single drip on stock or a glass display front damages the product and the shop's image. The cause is usually weak insulation, a blocked condensate line or an unlevel unit, all of which can be diagnosed and fixed in one visit.

Who it's for

How we work

How we work

  1. 1

    Site survey and loads

We visit the site and map every heat source: entrances, lighting, expected crowd density and facade orientation, then size the units correctly for each section.

  2. 2

    Design and materials

We design the duct network in our own workshop from G90 galvanised sheet to dimensions that give even air distribution, and select units from brands we distribute such as Carrier, YORK and Gree.

  3. 3

    Installation coordinated on site

We coordinate installation with the project programme so ductwork does not delay finishing trades, and run Mueller copper in runs of up to 30 metres without welded joints to reduce potential leak points.

  4. 4

    Start-up and maintenance contract

We start up the system and check air distribution in every section, then set a preventive and corrective maintenance schedule timed so work never overlaps with the shop's trading hours.

Some of our work

Ductwork, rooftop units and diffusers, from work we've completed in Jeddah.

  • Galvanized rectangular duct trunk with branch takeoffs and round diffusers, hung from a black ceiling, a Carrier unit visible behind — interior finishing stage.
  • Round diffusers and a spiral duct trunk in a tiled stairwell service shaft.
  • Rooftop ductwork and an exhaust fan, with Jeddah buildings in the background.
  • Rooftop packaged AC units with rectangular duct transitions, city buildings behind.
  • Insulated rooftop duct run beside a packaged unit, a warehouse roof in the background.
  • A grid of round diffusers in an open-plan office ceiling, mid-construction.
  • An insulated rooftop duct elbow, against a mountainous backdrop.
  • Large insulated ductwork running along a factory ceiling, with workers visible below.
  • A yellow round diffuser mid-installation, with spiral duct and a suspended ceiling grid.
  • Duct insulation wrap in progress on a construction site, bare duct still exposed.
  • A black-painted duct trunk with round diffusers and track lighting, in a finished retail interior.

What sets this district apart

Al Baghdadiyah Al Sharqiyah is a relatively modern commercial district with malls, shopping centres and chained retail units under one roof or side by side on the street. Glass doors and open facades let hot air in all day, and shops packed with stock and customers need precise temperature and humidity control to protect clothing, food and electronics. Maintenance must happen during closing or quiet hours to avoid business disruption.

Al Baghdadiyah Al Sharqiyah lies in central Jeddah's commercial core, a district of modern malls and chained retail in sprawling, low-rise buildings.

Most malls and shopping centres here run central or semi-central AC systems to cover the large shared spaces.

The AC setup in Al Baghdadiyah Al Sharqiyah

  1. 1

    Central system with distributed ducting

Modern malls typically need one or more central AC systems pumping air through concealed ducts in ceilings and walls.

  2. 2

Multiple outdoor units on the roof

The mall's wide roof allows several outdoor units spread across it, reducing load on each unit and simplifying maintenance access.

  3. 3

Zone control for separate retail units

Separate shops within the mall may need independent thermostats to adjust temperature by each retailer's needs.

Before the visit

Before our visit in Al Baghdadiyah Al Sharqiyah

  1. 1

Arrange mall management access in advance

Contact the mall office beforehand to confirm the team can access roofs and restricted service areas.

  2. 2

    Schedule outside peak shopping hours

Pick a maintenance time in early morning, evening or Tuesday or Wednesday when the mall is less busy.

  3. 3

Confirm roof and duct access routes

Check that stairways to the roof and service points for ducts and filters are accessible and safe before the visit.

FAQ

Questions about Mall & retail HVAC

How do you handle doors that open onto the street all day?

An open door pushes in hot humid air and spikes the heat load suddenly. We include that load in the design and direct a supply outlet above the entrance to form an air barrier that reduces mixing. The survey confirms which arrangement suits each specific doorway.

Do you install separate units for each mall tenant?

Yes. A separate unit per tenant means each shop controls its own cooling and a fault in one unit does not affect the neighbour. It also makes consumption readings straightforward and makes maintenance responsibility clear for each party.

Why do you prefer rooftop packaged units for malls?

A rooftop packaged unit keeps the condenser and evaporator in one casing above the roof, freeing every inch of shop floor from outdoor units and shortening the duct run. Maintenance happens on the roof without entering the shop, which fits scheduling work outside trading hours.

How do you handle Jeddah's heat and its effect on rooftop units?

Rooftop units in Jeddah work in hot, salty and dusty air that strains the condenser and speeds fin corrosion. We specify units with corrosion-resistant coatings and include coil cleaning and compressor and condenser checks in the preventive schedule of every maintenance contract.

Does air distribution design differ between a small shop and a large mall?

The site survey decides. A small shop may need only a concealed unit with directional grilles, while a mall requires a duct network with dampers zoned by area. In both cases the positions of lighting, visitor traffic and entry doors are recorded before supply outlets are placed.

How do you manage the temperature swings caused by the open doors?

We size the system with slightly higher capacity and balance the air distribution across each zone, so distant areas don't cool unevenly whilst doors cycle open.

Can you service the system outside shopping hours?

Yes, we coordinate with mall management to schedule maintenance and cleaning during closing hours or slow periods to avoid disrupting shoppers.

High humidity damages stock, does your system control it?

Yes, we install dehumidifiers or select units with high drying capacity to keep relative humidity between 45 and 55 per cent, needed to protect clothing, electronics and food stock.

The mall is large with flat roofs, how do you place the outdoor units?

We use the broad roof to spread multiple outdoor units, which shortens copper runs, improves efficiency and makes maintenance and cleaning more straightforward.
